Siloed Portfolio.

Pretty much the way my career has worked out. Seems like everything I do is
either military, law enforcement or intelligence related. Good niche
though, I don't see my opportunities around here diminishing anytime soon.

I thought of "code monkey" a bit different I guess. Meaning someone that
codes from their head, is always studying, improving their skill set. I see
what you are saying now.

Code monkeys are developers that can't think for themselves so they add no
value to a project. e.g., typical IT process flow:

1.) Biz req
2.) BA work
3.) SA work
4.) High level design
5.) technical design
6.) coding <--- If you can only work here, you're a code monkey.
7.) unit testing
8.) sys testing
9.) defect resolution
10.) deployment

My point was this: you can try to "20/80" SA work, testing, and maybe even
some BA work. And you can FOR SURE 20/80 coding and maybe *some* technical
design. But you can't outsource high level design and, assuming the biz is
on-shore, that's not outsourced either.

Contractors, such as yourself and Tony, are typically hired to do #2 - #10.
People that can translate business requirements into deployed code will
continue to be highly valued. However, if I were giving advice, I'd say
that anyone who wants to continue to work in IT should build "siloed
portfolios"; meaning find a market niche like government work or the
insurance industry and specialize in it/them.

It's the knowing/translating-the-business part that can't be outsourced, so
IT folks, especially developers, need to move west and up the waterfall to
add value.
