Wow, dude, I think I agree with you here.  It's for this reason that I
believe the gov't needs a totally revamped education system because
the current one is horribly broken and not preparing our children to
compete in the global marketplace.

In many cases, such as soccer games that don't keep score because
it'll hurt self esteem, it's doing the exact opposite.

Yes, they should lose their savings.  They violated the first rule of
investing: never put all your eggs in one basket.  They knew the risk,
took it, and lost.  There are many gamblers that make the same mistake
- I know one personally.  And he lost everything including his wife
and kids.  It's sad, but should I pay for his gambling mistakes?
