Stephanie; I have started a series of articles on how Web developers working for the Federal Government can build cool Web sites without getting yelled at for doing so.
This is something I recently posted to another site, maybe it helps. -------- Best Practices For Using Flash - ( or how I manage the US Federal Government and its Sections) - 1) Write up a Requirements Tracability Matrix for all Flash content on the Web site. Give the movie a name, write down what it does, find someone who is responsible for it (even if you are that person), and write down a date when it will need to be reviewed. The reasons will be apparent below. 2) Create alternative content for the browser impared. Not only is it nice to do, it is the law if you are building for any kind of government agency. 3) Detect Flash content using Flash. Somewhere on your detection screen, put a small (18 x 18 px) Flash movie that forwards users to the real Flash page. If they do not support Flash, they will not go to the next page. You can fill this screen with whatever alternate content you want - the rest of the content will be ignored if Flash is present. 4) Keep your movie and alternate content in sync. Use the RTM to ensure you are updating all content with each new version of the Flash movie. 5) Put a link to the Flash plug-in on every page that uses Flash. If you follow these steps, no one can yell at you for having Flash on your Web page. I am almost ready to put up my new site with flash in it and was wondering what you all do for flash detection? Is it necessary? Do most newer browsers come with flash? Do you build an html version also just in case the user doesn't want to see the flash site? I am not making anything terribly spectacular, just redoing the menu system, case study etc. It is a very small file size actually so i am wondering if i even need to provide an html alternative... thoughts? ~~ Stephenie ______________________________________________________________________ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox.
