I disagree, I think people vote for the ones that they expect will carry out
policies voters support, and when they do an about-face (as with the total
breakdown of fiscal discipline), voters cream them.

The newest poll on immigration reform shows an overwhelming majority of
Americans support comprehensive reform- border security, a guestworker
program. Even earned citizenship has majority support. And that's a Fox
poll.

As for the President's performance, the economy is very good, but that's not
all. Our foreign relations are not nearly as bad as some whining voices
would have you believe. We have good relationships with most Asian nations
(excepting the slave state of North Korea and the military junta of
Myanmar). US standing with the public in Asia has even gone up some due to
relief efforts after the tsunami, the Pakistani quake, and the recent
Indonesian quake. Our relationships with our European allies seem to be
better than they have been in the last three years.

On the domestic front, Bush is totally in sync with the public on
immigration reform. He is out in front on Social Security, though people
(and Congress) have not yet faced up to the problem.

Despite many known attempts, there have been no terrorist attacks on US soil
since 9/11. We can all be concerned about warrantless wiretapping and phone
log database mining, but everyone needs to acknowledge that our public
servants at all levels of government have been enormously successful at
dealing with the threat of terrorism within our borders.

We have a dedicated military that continues to support the hopes of Afghans
and Iraqis who want to live in free, democratic societies, and Bush remains
committed to providing America's support. And we aren't just helping there.
We have troops all over the world on peacekeeping and humanitarian missions.

Despite a late start, Bush has even acknowledged the need for America to
develop alternatives to the oil economy.

All in all, not a bad record. Not a perfect one by any means, but not bad.
