My position (often stated) is that it makes good sense either way.

Position one: human activity does, indeed, cause global change.

Position two: human activity does not, in any way, cause global climate
change.

If the first position is true we need to reduce emissions, find cleaner
sources of energy and consider our actions on a global scale. If the second
is true we should still do that.

Remember however that if the first position is true it affects us, humans,
almost exclusively. "Life on Earth" will go one quite happily with very
little change. However we've constructed our society to be very dependent
on a stable environment.

Climate change could mean major shifts in arable land, huge changes in
fishing grounds and livestock grazing land. All of these will drastically
affect us. At the very least, even if our food supply holds steady it will
cause enormous financial issues.

This kind of stress will almost definitely cause other problems - perhaps
catastrophic ones.

So, we're faced with a nearly overwhelming scientific consensus telling us
that bad things are going to happen unless we do things that are probably a
good idea anyway.

And we're confused, as a culture, what to do.
