I expect that either would be a viable option for most laptops. I use the USB video card to add a third monitor to my 'office' setup (monitor 1 is laptop; monitor 2 goes into the vga out of the laptop; monitor 3 uses the usbVGA card). It isn't for gamer's or [probably] high end displays, but it's functional and works well enough for coding. i wouldn't use it for video or graphics.
