I hear that one a lot, "if the Dems are so smart why did they lose?" I find it ironic because, if there's a war of policy ideas of course the easiest, and therefore stupidest, ones will win an election. Winning an election doesn't take smarts, it takes a lack of ethics. You have to be willing to lie, cheat, and steal from millions of people. The best example of that is now coming out with Hillary Clinton and John McCain. Both are shamelessly pandering (and therefore lying) to the base in order to raise money and win the primary.
