Tom, A couple of things to point out, none intended as a personal attack and all subject to the fact that (a) it's 1am here, (b) I'm just a developer without any financial gain in the rise and fall of the IT sector of the market and (c) I'm tired of seeing "Cold Fusion is Dying" posts on CF specific lists.
First of all, in comparing the financial sheets of Microsoft and Macromedia you are looking at two completely different entities. Both are software firms, both sell products and both offer a server-side scripting language, but beyond that point no other comparisons can be made. Microsoft has a slew of other products as does Macromedia. Hell, if MM considered MS "competition", why is ColdFusion completely compatible with IIS? Sorry, I'm rambling... financially *all* IT performers, big and small, are down. If you are a *serious* investor then I will give you this advice... it's something that I've been told by several family members and friends: when the price of a stock is down, buy. If it goes down lower, buy more. When it goes up and you really think you need the money, sell half and hold the rest for the next time it goes up. The stock market and the economy are cyclical beings and people that are investing long term are having a heyday. Personally, I'll look back on 2001 in 30-odd years when I'm setting up 401k withdrawals and think, "man, I got a lot that year". Oh, and one note on the last link... If memory serves me correctly, June 30 2001 was right around the time that MM and Allarie became one entity. That may have some of the effect on the numbers. Also, 2001 was not a good year for any company, and trend-wise I think that overall numbers will agree with me (not going to take the time to research it, it's a moot point). Hell, you want to see the ultimate definition of "screwed", take a look at Easy Street (currently trading as EASYD)... I bought when they were Mail.com (MAIL) at 21.25/shr (6 shares, I played in the market with some money left over from stocks I got from working for Tandy). Now they're trading at 3.80/shr after a reverse 10 for 1 split. Second point- if you were a regular subscriber or visitor to either list (CF-Talk or CF-Community), you would have seen the ASP vs. CF vs. PHP discussions we've had. One thing that we all know and realize is the CF is not the end-all of scripting languages. I for one embrace the philosophy that knowing how to program at a logical level is key to a developer's success in the industry. Language is irrelevant. If you know how to write a page that gathers information from a database and loops through it and displays it in a specific format in one language, it is a matter of semantics for you to figure out how to do it in another. Maybe that's because I have web-based, disk based and hardware based programming experience. Finally, I want to reiterate that I'm tired of seeing people come into a group and immediately slam the company/product line/concept of that group. Why do people do that? It's not just here... I get them on my Ham Radio and BBS lists. Both are hobbies of mine and there's always got to be someone that wants to spoil my fun. There you have it, my unabashed, opinionated, undereducated response to a baseless fear. If you want to learn ASP, go ahead... it's not that difficult of a syntax to learn. I know it, and so do many many many other people on this list. Thing is, we're here to talk about CF. The Community side of the list is more for personal chit-chat, political debate, muffin throwing and the occasional discussion on religion. Feel free to join in if you like. C. Hatton Humphrey -----Original Message----- From: Tom Forbes [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2002 12:10 AM To: CF-Community Subject: The Death of Cold Fusion Would anyone with some financial and marketing expertise care to discuss the issue of the mutation of CF5 into something else. I have a rather widely accepted theory that most analysts find quite a bit of credence in. IMHO, to those of you who have already lost tens of thousands of dollars over this sham, is stay away from MM. IMHO, they will not make a decent profit until 2004 - ready for that? I will reveal my sources if enough people seem to be interested and can read a financial sheet. In the mean time, compare stock performance charts of MACR and MS. Read the notes DAILY such as: http://finance.yahoo.com/q?d=t&s=MACR http://biz.yahoo.com/n/m/macr.html http://biz.yahoo.com/p/m/macr.html http://biz.yahoo.com/z/a/m/macr.html (this one is guaranteed to burn your ass) http://messages.yahoo.com/?action=q&board=MACR (take all info with a grain of salt, and compare it with other boards) http://biz.yahoo.com/fin/l/m/macr.html (and this one ladies and gentlemen will make you cry - or go out and buy an asp book.) Well, per Mr. Dnowitz's request, we are now all corralled into the correct forum. But guess what - it doesn't make the news any better - it just limits the number of programmers that can, USING THEIR OWN WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE, will glean any knowledge and possible fore warning. Well, everyone knows how to read the tape, and everyone knows how to read between the lines. (like no version CF5.2 or 5.5 - we'll just make a big deal out of it- cause everyone to buy the thing, it won't work the first time around- so call the MM "tech Serv" lines. This is getting entirely too humorous. OFF TO RESEARCH ASP! I feel like the pied piper. **************************************************************************** * Tom Forbes, Forbes Web Consulting, Inc.
