First off... also saw the trailer for "Spiderman 3". That looks REALLY good (although the trailer kind of sucked).
Took my son (7 years old) to see "Superman Returns". We were able to see it on the DLP projector. It was noticeably clearer and sharper than traditional film - it really made the film "pop". I would have LOVED to see it in IMAX 3D but since we've left Boston we take what we get. Overall the movie was fitting the character. If anything it perhaps paid a bit too much respect to the original movie. I wasn't thrilled about the "big suprise" (I just don't see how their going to keep such a thing going) and the "big event" at the end was a bit silly in my opinion but suitably over the top (at least he didn't turn back time by reversing the spin of the Earth). The effects were uniformly excellent (as you'd expect for $300 million) and the casting was significantly better than I feared. Some roles (Luthor Clark, Jimmy, Perry, etc) were nearly perfect. Unfortunately very few of the traditional characters (especially Ma and Pa Kent) were woefully under-utilized. Ma Kent had something like three lines. Jimmy Olsen and Perry White were well-acted but written as scenery for the most part - they just didn't have much meat to them. Kevin Spacey did an excellent job as Luthor. I was a bit disappointed with his back-story however. I've always preferred the business mogul Luthor. My son really liked it... even after nearly three hours in the theater he said it was, and I quote, "perfect". I don't quite agree but I'm really glad I saw it with him.
