>First off... also saw the trailer for "Spiderman 3". That looks REALLY good
>(although the trailer kind of sucked).

Come on, the symbiote crawling over him, that was awesome.

>Took my son (7 years old) to see "Superman Returns". We were able to see it
>on the DLP projector. It was noticeably clearer and sharper than
>traditional film - it really made the film "pop". I would have LOVED to see
>it in IMAX 3D but since we've left Boston we take what we get.

Only 25 minutes of the film was in 3D, so I don't think you would have missed
much since the film is so long.

>Overall the movie was fitting the character. If anything it perhaps paid a
>bit too much respect to the original movie.

I think this was part of their problem is that the movies they had to live up
to are so entrenched in people's mind that they needed this movie to bridge the
gap that Christopher Reeves does not equal Superman.

>I wasn't thrilled about the "big suprise" (I just don't see how their going
>to keep such a thing going) and the "big event" at the end was a bit silly
>in my opinion but suitably over the top (at least he didn't turn back time
>by reversing the spin of the Earth).

I thought the big surprise was done very well. They could have gone horribly
wrong with it, but they played it very cool. It will be interesting if they do
anything with it at all.

>Unfortunately very few of the traditional characters (especially Ma and Pa
>Kent) were woefully under-utilized. Ma Kent had something like three lines.
>Jimmy Olsen and Perry White were well-acted but written as scenery for the
>most part - they just didn't have much meat to them.

I think the only one that should have had more input was Ma Kent. Jimmy and
Perry had about as much input as they normally have in the comic books.

>Kevin Spacey did an excellent job as Luthor. I was a bit disappointed with
>his back-story however. I've always preferred the business mogul Luthor.

They didn't go far with the back story with Luthor. They did come out with a 4
part comic book that went further into everyone's back story, Ma, Luthor, Jor
El, and Lois. In the Luthor back story they show that girl that is his
girlfriend worked at the prison, fell in love with Lex and hooked him up with
the old woman he was with. That's how he was able to get out of prison. Luthor
had lost everything. In the comic book he talks how Superman took 5 years of
his life, 5 years he will never get back. It did a good job of showing the
transition from Lex as a comical villan in the movies to a darker villan having
lost 5 years of his life. He also talked about how the land scheme idea was not
up to his caliber and that he was better than that. Which makes his new scheme
of creating land much more interesting. But without that comic book back story
the whole thing kind of feels rushed, as in who the heck is this woman and why
is he married to her. Also there are a bunch of hidden bits in the movie, for
example the woman who played Lex's wife was the same woman that played Lois
Lane in the Superman series starring George Reeves.

>My son really liked it... even after nearly three hours in the theater he
>said it was, and I quote, "perfect". I don't quite agree but I'm really
>glad I saw it with him.

I agree that it was perfect. The showed Superman how we all expected to see
him, had a love story that wasn't cheesey and left it open for more movies. To
me, that's perfect, able to take a classic story like Superman and not be able
to tarnish our memory of it.

If you haven't noticed I'm a huge Superman fan, as well as a wealth of useless
comic book knowledge.
