No, the slow US slide into financial ruin began in the 1930's under
Roosevelt. Social Security and Medicare, first envisioned as a safety net
for the very elderly, have become the two biggest windfalls in the history
of the world. Elderly voters are the reason we keep sinking into the depths.


The difference between the US and Venezuela is that we have a huge economy
that allows us to still take care of business (even if, as Gruss implies, we
are technically bankrupt)
