OK, talk about a quick decision: I ended up getting the Garmin Nuvi 350
(http://tinyurl.com/z2pqx) for just over $600 on Amazon.

It's a surprise for the husband, and the small profile/screen, lightweight
design, and in particular feature of reading road signs (i.e., turn left on
Smith St. instead of turn left in .02 miles) is very important, since he has
a lot of trouble getting around and it'll be useful to teach him some street
names. It gets great reviews, and I hope he likes it! It gets here
tomorrow! Not sure if I'll be able to keep it a secret all night, though!
