My point with gymnast is they are usually a lot stronger than guys
three times their size.

I'm guessing here, it's been a long time, but it sounds like the
crossover in toning up. High reps and lots of sets work great for
definition until you overdo it. Then the definition fades and you just
become stocky. Cardio if you do it for your cardiovascular system
shouldn't give you mass.
I used to do the bicycle, a cal3 classes and then the circuit - ten
machines, ten reps and one-minute pause in between. Never enough time
on any particular muscle group to build up. Then I'd hit the heavy
weights. But I trained for skiing, meaning endurance, and never had to
worry about weight. At least until I quit smoking and got a desk job
:)
