We've run into this with our ferrets, treatment vs. quality of life.
We've had two ferrets in two months die of lymphoma. in Spikes case we
could've opted for radiation and chemotherapy
But...
1) there's only about a 30-50% sucess rate
2) even in sucessfull cases the ferret only gains a few months
3) Spike was seven years old, which for a ferret is ancient
4) most ferrets don't survive the treatment
During the treatment he would've
1) had an IV tube stuck in him
2) would not have been able to play with the rest of the animals (other
ferrets, dogs, cats)
3) would've been separated from the other ferrets (they had all pretty
much bonded)
4) would've been utterly and completly miserable, sick and in pain
and... the treatment is several thousand dollars
we had too choose treatment vs. quality of life.... quality of life
(better: lack of quality of life) won.

I cringe at those numbers, but I know i'd do the same thing. I'm such a
sucker for the unconditional joy dogs bring...i'd bankrupt myself to keep
em
happy and healthy....wouldn't even be a question.
