Prednisone is some good stuff in cases like this. It kept our dog alive and well for 3 years after her auto immune disorder kicked in. Our cat is on it now for an unknown digestive disorder. For me it strikes the right balance between no treatment and doing something like chemo - which I could never do to a pet, because there's no way to explain to them that even though I'm making him/her more sick now, it's so he/she's better later.
I feel for you man. Putting Scully down this summer was one of the hardest things I have ever done. She was the most stoic dog on the planet, and never let you know she was hurting. It took a whole crew of vets (and $2300) to finally agree that she wasn't able to maintain herself without drastic and ongoing interventions and that even though she didn't act painful, she must be suffering. The night we put her down, our vet friend came to our house at 10:00 p.m. and friends and family gathered around her, and while we all cried, she licked away our tears - always more concerned with us than herself. You'll know when it's time. I'm glad that you and Rocky's mom are able to put aside your differences in this matter. Nothing like tragedy to put things in perspective. Hang in there.
