Oops, forgot you said in your original post that you use Nikons. I'm totally a 
Canon girl, so not sure what Nikon has to offer. But I'd be surprised if they 
don't have something similar. The 70-200mm range (or thereabouts) is one of the 
most commonly used  and easiest to build a really top-quality lens as a 
reasonable price. That's why I'm not a huge fan of the do-all lens, like the 
18-200 mm. They almost always give up a lot of quality at the high telephoto 
end. The quality of even the cheaper lenses built for strictly telephoto use 
are generally better.
