One should know something about what one is critiquing if one spends
many many man-hours producing a document that states unequivically
that the best way to do something is a way that was outmoded and
abandoned several years before.

Everything may be a product to somebody but please, I beg, try not to
confuse an idea about what *might* make a process better with
practical experience and "in-the-trenches" know-how.

Case in point, replace CISCO routers that function exactly to
parameters portion by a highly specialized portion of a company --A
small portion, but one that requires the ability to make multiple
VLANs etc on an almost ad hoc basis--with NetASQ routers, three to
four times the cost, for literally half the functionality (90% of the
company at large's needs are met with NetASQ inferior functionality).

Further add to that a hefty maintenance fee from a corporate level IT
division who adds no value other than oversight.

Net result, had saner heads not prevailed, the small portion of the
company--while toeing the company line--would have lost a crucial
ability to function in a mode necessary to keep customer projects
firewalled off from each other, in our industry, that is a HUGE deal.

That, sir, is only a small portion of some of the SickSegull
streamlining decisions that have been made. And FWIW one of the ones
that didn't affect me directly.

FWIW a SickSeagull Blackbelt told me I should adopt PHP or ASP because
it is free.

When I countered that out-of-the-box functionality, years of
experience and lower average development time for CF far outweigh the
cost benefit of free or open source technology especially given the
learning curve and the rapid pace of change within our organization, I
was able to convince my manager that the SS was a tad on the mistaken
side.

Not that I would mind learning a new tech, just not at the expense of
scrapping everything I have developed so that some suit can feel good
about saving the company a few shekels.

Sorry to disagree...
