Have you thought about ghosting your hard drive onto your server (Assuming you have Norton Ghost). There are other apps out there that are less expensive that you could get. That way you make an image of your machine the way it is now, and you put that image back on when you are done with the upgrades.
And I would like to second your opinion of Dell. I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 that my daughter uses daily, I have a Dell Dimension E510 that I use daily for everything from programming to gaming, and I have a Dell Poweredge 500SC that I used to co-lo for several clients and now sits under my desk as my development server, and they are all working great. The laptop's screen is barely attached these days (kids are hell on computers, especially teenagers) but as long as I keep the machine closed and her external monitor hooked up all is well. That and the server are over 5 years old and the Dimension is almost one year old and they are solid as a rock. I will never buy anything other than a Dell. Although I do have an IBM A21M laptop that I use on my commuter train to do work on. It is slow as dirt but has run solid for over 6 years so I am not complaining. But Dells are really the way to go. You may pay a little more than an HP or Gateway, but man is it worth the couple of extra $$. I only wish I bought the warranty like you did Erika, and then I could have had the screen replaced. Oh well, live and learn. (Servers, laptops, desktops) I love them to the ends of the earth. I have an old Dell Latitude C840 laptop (4yrs old) that I've been using non-stop as my primary computer for all those years. I leave it on almost 24/7 and I take it with me everywhere. The harddrive has recently started making the cry of death sounds, the fan is starting to go, and the sound is dead. I've kept an extended warranty on it ($295 for 2 years) so I called them up Friday to finally say, "Hey, come fix her up." Whilst I was at it I complained about a couple of pixels in the screen that were bad. As in, maybe, 1%. Not only was the technician brilliant and friendly and fast, but he spoke English (although I do have Business support which is here in North America). They will be here Monday, replacing EVERYTHING but the case and the memory. LOL And they are sending all OS disks and drivers as well since I cant find them. I think that is brilliant. :) A pain because I have to start with a fresh harddrive and I have to reinstall 4 years worth of programs ... but at least I never kept my data on here. Gotta love Dell and gotta love really good warranty service. -- Cheers, Erika ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Create robust enterprise, web RIAs.
