Hmm ... yes and no.

Yes, in that the airline biz model is only 25 years out of gov
regulation and socialist habits die hard.  I think the "realignment"
that was promised is just beginning.  In any event,  all of the majors
based their business model on the very expensive last minute business
customer seats.

Businesses have finally wised up to that and now airlines are having
to take a more a-customer-is-a-customer approach that Southwest has
had for 30 years.  Many of the majors just couldn't turn their
operations from that golden handcuff until it cut their hand off.

The 'no' part of my answer is that the US government forces the
airlines to pay for airport security.  That's ridiculous in my
opinion, especially when the gov't decides to up security costs by
1000%.

Airlines should focus on getting people from 'A' to 'B' as cheaply as
possible and the government should focus on keeping the embarkation
points secure.
