Because the bias to the right is slight while the bias to the left is gigantic.
As for the print, the leadership is killing the NY Times with his
extremely liberal views. Replace Pinchy and they have a chance of
regaining the great reputation they had. That still might not sell
papers but they might see a lot more paid subscribers online.
