It's just a phenomenon that surrounds the human animal.

We can become infactuated with a scenario that seems to reasonably represent
a threat to our existence.....diminishing rain forests, global cooling,
global warming, oceanic pollution, sun spots, asteroids, acid rain....on and
on. Everything on that list has been the "hot" doomsday topic at one point
or another over the last 20 years or so.

Part of it is a fascination with our destruction, I think. Part of it is a
desire to feel that we have some more control over our destiny than we
really do. We don't want to be at the whim of Nature...like the dinosaurs
were, for instance, if you believe the meteorite theory of extinction.

Part of it is a completely valid desire to help continue our species as long
as possible. What's fascinating is that once we've exhausted our interest in
the current "hot" topic, we move almost effortlessly onto the next
one....with almost zero memory of our past.

In 5 years, or maybe 7, when global warming has been replaced by the latest
and greatest doomsday scenario, we'll have almost entirely forgotten
everything we are discussing these days.

This isn't a rap against global warming or it's potential for harm....just
an interesting observation on human nature.
