I was cruising around the conferences of a "bbs" that I've been using pretty
much daily since 1986, and I found the following in an item I'd entered
about alternave ways of accessing the internet.

The bbs in question is "M-Net" and has been operating continuously as a
multiuser, public access unix system since 1983. For more information,
telnet://m-net.arbornet.org or visit www.arbornet.org

Note the references to hourly limitations on internet service. =)

There are plenty of other ways to get to the Internet and to each othere
here in Ann Arbor.

For instance, Jared will sell you a dedicated phone line on his system for
only the cost of the phone line and installation. He's got ISDN service, a
network connection FAR superior to the one here at M-Net.

Unfortunately, Nether.net is a packed system, and if you don't already have
an account there, it's hard to get one unless you bribe him. :) Send some

---

Grex is also available. Their net connection is outrageously slow, and many
of their dialin's are still 2400 baud, god only knows why. But it's still
available, and a lot of people find it more than adequate.
---

There are service providers as well...

IC-Net offers 60 hours of SLIP access for $30 a month, and I believe offers
unlimited shell access for an extra $10 a month.

----

MSEN offers service as well that isn't nearly as bad as M-Net's service..

----

You can also get an authorization account from Mich.net, and get unlimited
PPP and telnet from the NASes for something like $35 a month. A pretty good
deal, but the Michnet dialin's are VERY VERY busy.

----

mich.com also offers PPP access and shell access via some local dial-in's
(not in A2) or via the Mich-net dialins. For only $20 a month you get 80
hours of access, and then only 60 cents an hour after that.
----

Net.com also has local dialin's in this area.. $20 a month gets you
something like 30 or 40 hours with them, plus unlimited weekend and late
night usage.

----

There are MANY MANY alternatives to the access you MAY be paying for here.

Remember, M-Net has 10 guest dialins, and you can telnet here for free, when
the net connection is up.
