In this sting anyway, the police action didn't kick in until the perv
arranged a meeting. They weren't hunting down IP's.

sure if it protects one kid that is great!

It doesn't.

also i wonder, how many kids are just out on chat rooms trying to

Tons of them. The law says a person under 16 cannot legally consent to
sex...these kids are doing that every day.

me and my wife watched it the other night in a flu induced haze.

Yeah, what's up with that? My wife asked me the same thing. I was an op for
years on IRC, and we scolded these kids something fierce when we saw them. I
was the long winded lecturer that they hated running into :)

A judge in (where else) Kansas threw out some of these cases a year or so
ago, but they've been appealed to a higher court and it's predicted that
these cases will hold up in the end.

I have NO problem with these kinds of stings. How is it any different than
an undercover cop buying drugs? Or soliciting a hit? Or setting up a bait
car to catch auto thieves?

You have a high crime area, so you run a targeted operation to catch as many
criminals as possible, while planting the seed of doubt in other would be
criminals. I think it's exactly what the cops should be doing.

The ultimate solution, of course, is educating the kids though.....but
that's the parents job. Not the cops, not the school's...parents.
