It is the culture of political correctness that makes the French look bad to 
us.  Soldiers, in general and regardless of nationality, are politically 
incorrect.  For over 170 years the French army has been handicapped by 
excessive political intervention.  The Legion etrangere had less of such 
political intervention.  "Political officers" in that unit suffered a higher 
KIA percentage than in the French Army.  They were also on the sharp end a lot 
more often than thier regular army counterparts.
