what territory did they gain again? Maybe it's me, but I don't remember that part.
What I learned, and still appears to me to be true, is that the US invaded Canada. Unsuccessfully. Britain won because it didn't lose what it was defending. The US lost because it invaded Canada (as a result of its treaty with France, by the way) and was repudidated, then had its but kicked all the way back to Washington.
