"Honestly, I'd prefer it if EVERYTHING was done by society, vs.
the .gubmint. But that's sorta along the lines of people doing
stuff because they know it's right, vs. "fear the stick", so to speak."

I agree. Unfortunately, it seems, more and more people only do it
because of the stick. For example, one of my pet peeves is people
parking in handicap spots and the access lane for handicap ramps and
parking spaces (the striped lines beside handicap spots or access to
ramps). I see people park in handicap spots some, but I see people
park in the access zones all of the time. Besides the fact that it
just isn't right, those striped lines are there for a reason (in fact,
ahem, I have had several verbal confrontations with people about
this). Whenever a cop is around though, people steer clear of the
access zones like the plague. Hmmm

"I think we've gone so far down the path of legislating morality and
good behavior that we don't even know that there is a nother way-
which is silly because we mostly rely on that other way anyways."

Again, I agree. Of course, I think a lot of this stems from not
enforcing the simple laws in the past and a lack of moral concern
these days. That is, no one cares if their neighbor thinks they are a
thief, wife beater, cheater, etc. anymore. Hell, William Jefferson
got caught on video and tape taking a bribe (which was found wrapped
in tinfoil in his freezer) yet he still declares his innocence. We
are a very egocentric society.

"Part of The Answer, is less Laws, if you ask me."

I agree on the condition that the remaining laws are enforced equally
among all classes and people (the rich shouldn't be able to buy
justice, etc.). Unfortunately, the legal system is not going to be
simplified. The lawyers and politicians would never allow that. So,
you have to live within the system, which takes laws. Lots of laws.
Also, you need enough laws to protect individual rights.

Of course, maybe all is not lost. I just read the Fare Tax book which
describes a way to simplify taxes in our country by a tremendous
amount. According to the book, there is a lot of support for the idea
(I haven't seen the support in my area). If the tax code in our
country can ever be simplified, maybe the legal system can be as well.
It's got to be just as complicated with just as many special interest
groups trying to protect it.
