Right now these are features that have been (sometimes unofficially
announced) for the big update in a few weeks (along with my comments):

+) PS1 downloads on the PS3. You knew that they had to come eventually.
Now they've just got to open the PS Store to the PSP directly all my
complaints about PS1 games will be settled.

+) Background downloaded (multi-tasking). A feature that should have been
included from the beginning... but better late than never. Word is that
this will also open up other potentials: like video conferencing over games
and other things.

+) DVD upscaling. I think this was held up more by legal considerations
than anything else. The makers of my upscaling networked DVD player were
recently forced to remove the feature from their units by the MPAA/RIAA -
rumor has it that Sony had a lot of trouble getting this feature past for
the PS3.

+) Faster Web Browser. Apparently the latest version of the browser will be
included. There's also talk that, like on the PSP extra storage
(the hard drive on the PS3) will be usable as extended memory for the web
browser. Although in my experience I've not had any trouble with the PS3
browser (YouTube and StrongBad Email on the big screen is a BLAST).

What I'm just as interested in are the little details however. These are
features I hope are included, but who knows:

+) The ability to launch into a loaded disk or the XMB - the PSP has this;
why on earth is it missing from the PS3?

+) More control over resolutions. Browsing at 1080i sucks on my TV, but
480p is fine for most things - but I'd still like to play games at 1080i (my
older TV only does 480p and 1080i). I want to control this without
constantly hitting the configuration screens.

+) Volume leveling for the "Games" portion of the XMB. The imagery and
music when you hover over games on the XMB is great - but some games (I'm
looking at the MotorStorm demo) take it a bit too far. I want to say "No"
to screaming metal music as I'm navigating the games list.

+) The mini-preview of movies on the XMB is great - but why doesn't it work
with the movies downloaded from the PS Store? This is just plain silly.

Finally there are few things that I doubt will happen soon but damn well
should.

+) I want media sharing from my PC. I want the PS3 to see a PnP streaming
server and attach to it. It should, at least, play WMA and MP3 music (the
PSP already does this) but it would be amazing to also play DIVx and XVID
files.

Of course it won't. Sony's pushing Location Free (which I won't buy when my
expensive PC is already doing the job better) and is too busy pacifying the
studios to include a feature that could - gosh! - be used by pirates.

+) I want "Loco Roco" for the PS3... now! After playing flow (which is the
first game to convince me that the motion controls are more than just
gimmick) I want more. The rocking, rolling, swooping world of Loco Roco is
an insanely perfect fit for the controller.

This might happen, but if it were happening soon we'd have heard about it.

Speaking of this a motion controlled "Katamari Damacy" would also be
greatly, greatly appreciated - even a patch that you use the motion
controller with the old games (if that's even possible).

+) I want other studios to jump on the PS1 download bandwagon. It's great
that some things are coming out, but where's the beef?! Where "Silent
Hill", "Final Fantasy" (VII, VIII and IX), where's "Vagrant Story" or
"Warhawk"?

I know that these are big games and testing is an issue.... but let's move
it folks!

I'm actually getting excited about the PS3 again - and it looks like there's
actually good reason to.
