I was in Atlanta last year for the ProgPower festival
(http://www.progpowerusa.com/ for the curious). The subway isn't bad, it'll
get you to the touristy areas. The Vortex rocks and has a great selection of
beer and single malt scotch. There's a little Italian place up the street
from Earthlink Live that's fantastic.

There's two restaurants to avoid: The Houlihan's on Peachtree (the service
sucks) and the Irish Pub in Atlanta Underground (the service is non
existent, the food is awfull and they can't mix drinks to save their
collective lives)

If you're there in October most of the hotels around Earthlink Live will be
sold out, as the ProgPower crowd is in town, and the festival has already
sold 3000 + seats.

What kindsa stuff are you into? There are several little parts of
town depending on what sort of things you are interested in.

Little Five Points (L5P) is a little eclectic and use to be quite
punk/alternative. It's not so much anymore, but still a unique and
different. A few good spots in L5P are the Vortex
(http://www.thevortexbarandgrill.com), which is a burger joint with
awesome hamburgers and a very unique and irreverent apmosphere. L5P
is small enough to park and walk the whole thing.

Buckhead is probably where most out of towners think is the best
hotspot. It use to be a famous nightspot, but has declined GREATLY in
that regard over the past 10-15 years. There's still quite a bit of
good shopping there though and two of the largest and most posh malls
in Atl are in this area. I would avoid it a a night-spot though, and
it's probably the worst neighborhood as far as traffic goes.

Virginia Highlands (VaHi) is probably my fav spot. It's kinda a
30-something neighborhood and has alot of great restaurants, food
spot, night-spots. It's small enough to park in one spot and walk
around all day.

Midtown is another good intown neighborhood, and is where I last lived
before moving out of Atlanta. It's where Peidmont Park is, the "big
city park" of Atlanta. It's all walkable, but a little more spread
out than L5P or VaHi. One of the most popular breakfast spots in Atl
is at the corner of 10th and Peidmont in Midtown, called the "Flying
Biscuit". Midtown's also pretty centally located and usually where I
get a hotel when I visit now-a-days. It's central to all the other
intown neighborhoods and makes a good jumping off point to explore the
city.

As far as specific destinations, alot of people like to visit the Coke
Museum, the Aquarium, CNN Center does an interesting tour, Stone
Mountain Park is interesting (but a half day trip at least).

Those are all intown locations - there is also a whole other worlds
Outside The Perimeter (OTP). This area is all suburbs and not
particularly interesting. Sure there are some spots out there that
may be worth visiting, but remember that Atlanta has some of the worst
traffic in the US, but most of it is freeway traffic going in and out
of the burbs. I would avoid them unless you have a specific plan and
know what the traffic situation is before going there.

Erika or Adam/David Churvis may have more to say about the burbs -
IIRC they both live in/towards the North Eastern Burbs of Atl.

If you want some more specific advice, speak up.... :)
