Sounds to me like he is indeed a true hero, putting the lives of others 
before his own. If you read the whole story it sounds as though he put 
himself in harms way to warn others of a pending detonation of an IED.   
It  went off before he could get the soldiers out of the way resulting 
in injuries to him and others.  He then spent the waning minutes of his 
life tending to the other wounded soldiers. 

My heart goes out to his friends  and family.
