According to the BBC the RM and sailors were conducting a standard search for 
smuggling. They were seized by the Revolutionary Guards, who do enrich 
themselves via smuggling. So I suspect that it has more to do with preventing 
the Brits from finding soemthing the Revolutionary Guards didn't want them to 
find.
