I think it's a distaste for tourists; it's a love/hate relationship.
They like the money but hate the hassle.  I don't think that's
uniquely French and one of the reasons my wife and I NEVER stay in
tourist areas when we travel: business districts or neighborhoods.

I do like hearing this though because I have a distaste for tourists
in Paris as well and the fewer the better.  ;-)
