>Mary Jo! For the first time ever I have to disagree with you. Just like
>there are different white cultures, there are different black cultures.
>Blacks come from hundreds of different countries. So saying you are proud to
>be black is exactly the same as saying you are proud to be white ...

Well, since I only read this over the web, I have NO idea who I am replying
to...but I certainly don't expect anyone to always agree with me. ;-) And
certainly this is a topic wide open when it comes to debate. I should have not
jumped in in the first place, and won't have time to continue it...but to
clarify my own feelings on it will just say this: Yes, there are different
black cultures, but in this country, being black is considered to have a unique
heritage and cultural identity....a shared past. There is far more in common
among different black cultures in our country than you can identify as a white
culture. Is it the WASPs? Jewish Americans? Strictly anyone of European
descent? Or Russian Americans? Regardless of whether you believe there truly is
a white culture or not, when people celebrate being black, it's a celebration
of their heritage and what they have overcome. There is a common identity and
culture there that you can't apply to white America as a whole. Nor does
celebrating being black have the same tones of oppression over other races that
celebrating being white does. So yes, you can be proud of your heritage and
what your ancestors may have achieved...but in our country celebrating
"whiteness" has strong racial overtones associated. And yes, I do think that
saying someone is "too white" is certainly racist as well. That's neither here
nor there in regards to whether someone can be "proud" to be white.
