Do you think a slander or libel lawsuit would have any standing at all?

He said it offhandedly.
He repeatedly apoligized.
He said there was _no_ basis for these remarks.
The reputation of the players has not been hurt in any way.

As a matter of fact, the reputation of these women has raised
unbelievably. The way they've handled this, and what their actions and
words have shown about their quality and character, has been truly
astounding. I think they have done a lot for representing their age,
gender, race, culture, sport, and school in the best possible light.
Better than winning.

So, there is no basis for such a suit (which is a civil offense, anyway)
