What we were trained to do for protected assailants is to put one in the groin,
then one or two in the exposed part of the head after he drops, depending on
the situation.

And as far as going into the hallway is concerned, you don't. You stay near a
corner with your weapon in a lowered Weaver stance. If you're properly trained
then you can fire accurately with either hand, depending on which way the guy
is coming toward you and which corner is between you. I'm cross-dominated (no
jokes, please -- I've already heard them all) left master-eyed and
right-handed, so learning to shoot ambidexterously wasn't too bad.

But essentially you would be, unless you waited for him to come to you. If
somebody is just aiming and shooting, your reaction time isn't going to be
the same, you will have to identify the threat, and fire and hit before he
  does.

Also the reports I've read said this guy had on a bullet proof vest. So,
then what? I realize getting shot, even with a vest on isn't going to feel
good, but what happens if he manages to stay vertical, and shoot you.
