Tank (our german shorthaired), kept him at bay. He got one leg over the
fence but not much more. We had a lumber yard behind our house and he
was standing on a unit of lumber trying to get over the fence. He was
fairly persistent because he was talking to Tank trying to calm him down
etc... for a good 5 minutes or so. When he heard the sirens he bailed,
police never found him.

The excitement came when my mom realized that dad had handed me the
carbine and told me to shoot if the burglar got past the dog. She went
ballistic. You gave him the gun and told him to shoot, he's a kid! What
the hell were you thinking?? Dad was like, he's a kid, they wouldn't
send him to jail. If I shot the guy there'd be all kinds of
investigations and court crap. But if a kid shot a burglar he'd be a
hero and nothing would come of it.

I had a great talk with my mom recently about things like this from my
childhood. I have all these stories of crazy things that happened or
that I did that to be honest I just wasn't sure of anymore. Did I make
them up, exaggerate situations? here them second hand? I just wasn't
sure. So I asked her about 10 or 12 things that I "remembered" but grew
to doubt. She verified all of them. Pretty much verifying the fact
that my parents are lucky to have any hair and I am probably lucky to be
alive.
