There probably needs to be a push for general education of the public.
 From what I've read, even if all the cfl's were dumped into our
landfills, the general level of mercury would only increase by .7 %
overall.  I'm sure that a lot of people have bigger sources of mercury
in their house at any one time too....like thermometers, thermostats,
tins of tuna...

But yes, the ignorant need to be educated.
