People are constantly, amazingly able to convince themselves of the
correctness of something despite obvious problems. These people were able
to watch their child waste away and finally die and were completely
convinced it was "right". More than that they were completely convinced
that it was the best thing for the child.

We all do the same thing on lesser scales all the time. "Work through the
pain" is pretty ridiculous but it's a core motto of many people. Mother's
consistently tell children to eat things that they don't like "because it's
good for them". We take awful tasting medicine because we know it will
help.

Sometimes our ability to counteract our instincts are for the best,
sometimes not. Sometimes, as in this case, it's extreme, wrong and deadly.
