In general I think that HP cartridges are a bit more than others but not incredibly more - HP has a tendency to make better cartridges. As I said my old Epson printer would constantly clog, my HP never has - I credit both the ink formulation and the quality of the cartridges for that. In many cases HP designs the printheads directly into the cartridge - meaning you get "new" (and clean) printheads every time you change the cartridge. Take a look and find out. Just randomly poking around at Staples.com it seems like the color cartridges for Epson, Lexmark and HP are all about the same price (about $30 a pop). It's hard to say if that's just luck or if the prices really are about the same but I'd guess it's the latter. The ink for your Brother is about $58 for a complete set (black, cyan, magenta and yellow) and for my HP PSC 950 (an older model) is about $64 (black and tri-color - but they do have a "special buy" for both together at $57) - this is from Staples. To be fair tho' the brother cartridges are rated for fewer pages (500 for black and 400 for color) than the HP cartridges (600 for black and 450 color). All told from my highly scientific price comparison it seems like a wash. ;^) You definitely might be able to save a bit by replacing individual color-cartridges - but in my experience the tri-color cartridges tend to run out pretty evenly, there's not as much waste as you might think (especially when printing photos since so much mixing is done). There are also high-capacity cartridges that cost more upfront but print more (for example there's a $54 tri-color cartridge for mine that prints more than double what the normal capacity cartridge prints - 58% more printing for 40% higher price). Of course there are also services that will refill cartridges for much less than new cartridges. You can also easily find third-party units or recycled units for big discounts. Personally I don't print that much so I'm kind of stuck in the "shit, it's run out, let's go buy some" group but I also try to stock up when I see sales.
