The Catholic interpretation of Genesis is that it is a STORY. It is not scientific fact. The story teaches us that God is Love, but humans are not (Cain and Abel). It also teaches that humans were given a free will to choose and chose not to live in perfection (Adam and Eve). There are other lessons (The casting out), but these were, for lack of a better word, superceded by the Christ and his resurection.
