I've been to both Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the anniversary dates (20 years ago). Even in Japan it is more of a carnival atmosphere than an atmosphere of mourning and atonement. Vendors hawking t-shirts, cotton candy, blah blah.... It was really unbelievable. There are speeches and anti-nuke booths and demonstrations but it just wasn't the somber environment I had expected.
However, on the evening of August 6th, in Hiroshima they release thousands of colored paper lanterns on wooden planks to float down the river. The floating lanterns are representations of the spirits of those who died when Little Boy was dropped. It is a beatifula nd moving sight.
