No, it was real.

It was on an NBC (or perhaps CNBC) program.  It was a follow-up to the
pieces they did on people standing around watching children get abducted by
strangers.

There have been a number of studies along these lines, and they all seem to
start out with the same reference to that woman who was murdered in NYC
while everyone turned away.

It *is* hard to believe until you see just how incredibly apathetic
Americans are across all economic boundaries.  It's almost like
entertainment to most.

In fact it's so prevalent that we have laws that put you in jail for not
taking at least reasonable action.  It's called "Depraved Indifference," and
it will send you to the big house if your inaction catches the wrong
person's attention.  Didn't they use that in the series finale of Seinfeld
to send everyone to jail for a year?
