Sounds like you've either
A) busted a belt
B) burned out the spin motor.

A is very easy to fix, and will cost you $10-15 for the part.  B isn't 
all that hard, but prices will vary and you need to be comfortable 
fixing electrical stuff yourself.

I hope your wife won't be home until tomorrow....
