This is simply not true. American Pit Bull Terriers are a registered breed with the UKC and have been on and off the AKC stud books in the past. However little of it bears any resemblance to the type of dog fighting done with so-called pit bulls today, and indeed does sound a bit like trying to white-wash what's actually going on.
