It is really cool - one of MS's biggest crosses to bear is the variation in
hardware. Using the VPC images they can all but guarantee a standardized
level of reliability for all the testers by maintaining full control over
the environment.

Better yet it's essentially zero impact on your test PC - once you're done
testing discard the image. Done and done.

Exactly! We have to do, annually, a full disaster recovery test (fail over
to our DR environment for a day, then fail back). One of the steps is to
Courier a hard drive from Boston (where the database is) to upstate NY
(where the fail over site is). We actually start a network transfer at the
same time: whichever gets their first is used.

This is a large database (information on about 11 million customers) but
we're also not a small company: these are big, redundant network pipes we're
talking about.

It still takes about 5 hours to transfer the data... and about five hours to
drive a hard drive there by truck.

I'm with you. I look at everything - it's too bad that nearly everything I
look at is a "side" in a fanatical battle!

I like my Windows PC. I like my Linux PC. If they were just a little
freakin' cheaper I'd have a Mac as well. I like my PS3 and my XBox and even
my Wii! I like my PSP and my Gamboy! I like my Chevy and my Honda! I like
my Oreos and my Hydrox!

Here you go. No "love" but it sums up the main points pretty well:

You definitely can't quantify taste... but you can quantify external drive
transfer speeds. ;^)

You didn't come off harsh at all. Don't get me wrong - I wasn't so much
responding to you as restating my original message.
