Look at your neighborhood. Most mail gets stolen either on the way to
your box or by your neighbors.

Personally, the last piece of mail stolen from me was 15 years ago,
and it was a 'columbia house' box that wouldn't fit in my apartment
lockbox, so no help there, however...

I now have a pretty video surveilance system by all of the entrances
to my house because of the amount of non USPS mail (UPS, FedEx, etc)
that has been stolen off of my front porch.

In my opinion, if you have the ability to put your mail box on the
street and you are in a densly populated area, it is more secure than
having it on your dark front porch.

As far as locking mailboxes, yes they sell them. Have a look at OSH,
Home Depot or whichever home improvement store there is around you.

By the way!
Congrat on your new home!

-Subj: Mailbox theft
-
-So, as part of finally owning a real house, with a driveway, yard,
and
-everything else, we are getting our first actual mailbox -- the kind
where
-the front opens and the little red flag goes up. Up to this point,
we've
-only ever had locked boxes -- the sort that comes with
apartment/condo
-living.
-
-My husband FREAKED OUT on me the other day over the possibility that
someone
-might steal our mail out of the new mailbox and insisted we get a PO
box and
-drive to the post office for our mail needs.
-
-I think he's being extremely paranoid -- I know mail theft happens,
BUT --
-come on. We hardly ever, maybe once a year, mail anything of value
like
-checks (we bank and pay all our bills online). Netflix movies.
Sometimes
-forms and official correspondence that might have our SSN. I think it
would
-be a huge hassle to pay for a PO box and go drive there every time we
want
-our mail (the nearest PO branch is 7 miles from our new house and not
on the
-way home from my husband's job).
-
-I have up to this point used home mail for my business stuff -- to
receive
-checks, mail taxes, etc. I will probably get a PO box for my business
since
-I've been meaning to anyway.
-
-But, to compromise and end the argument, I promised I'd research
options for
-protecting our personal mail.
-
-So --
-
-1. Have any of you ever had your mail stolen -- what happened and how
did
-you prevent it from occurring again?
-
-2. Do they make, I don't know, "mailbox locks" that allow the mail
carrier
-access, but no one else?
-
-Thanks for indulging my hubby's paranoia!
