iTunes isn't out, just takes an extra (and actually useful) step.

iTunes only lets you download a song 3 times from their store. and
play it on 2 different computers/devices (I think this is still
accurate).

So if you download a file, your mp3 player dies or needs reformatting,
and then you buy a new computer, you are out of luck.

Whenever I buy songs or albums from iTunes, I immediately burn a cd of
the audio, and then import that audio as an mp3 file, tag it, and use
the mp3 file on my various players. I use musicmatch, mainly to
properly tag the files.

But as a broader question, where do I get my audio for digital players?

I use iTunes and musicmatch to play back mp3 files from my laptop.
I use winamp to host a couple of personal "radio stations" that my
friends and family share.
I use a wireless linksys media link to play music out on the deck, and
in the yard.
I use an iPod video 80gb for walking about.
I use an iPod shuffle when kayaking (so if it gets wet, I dont cry too much)
I use my eBookReader for those few audiobooks I listen to.

Because of this mix of needs, mp3 files are my preferred format. All
of my mp3 files are well organized, standardly named, tagged properly,
with cover art, and in many cases, with lyrics embedded.

The source of mp3 files in my collection, in order of most used.

* cds burned on the computer. most cds are used or cut bin, samples
sent to radio stations (and "thrown away" into my collection, with
some compilations bought full price, and cds bought at concerts of
lesser known bands, and yard sales/flea markets.
* iTunes. (anything new and findable, or anything i have to have RIGHT NOW)
* albums. (ion usb record player gets the songs into the computer)
* cassette tapes. (plusdeck 2c usb cassette player gets songs into the computer)
* rhapsody.
* direct trading. especially for bootlegs, and for _old_ and
unfindable early punk.
* usenet.
* recorded off the radio into soundcard/audacity (underground garage,
and local college radio)
