you said it- this is all about staging the '08 political season. The
Democrats have placed their bets against the war, the Republicans have
placed their bet on the war. If the war goes well, it is good for
Republicans and bad for Democrats. If the war goes badly, it is good for
Democrats and bad for Republicans. If you ask me, it sucks to be a Democrat
in Congress right now, betting your political career that the US is going to
lose the war, or at least be doing badly enough that the call for pullout
drives people to vote for you. It sucks to be a Republican, too, hoping
against past evidence that the Iraqi government can rise above the current
mess and get a grip on the country so you can tell the voters that the war,
whatever its cost, has led to a better future for Iraq and another
democratic ally in the Middle East for the U.S.

Sadly, that is the state of affairs in the country.
