those are the people who are reading the news stories that portray
this as a crime problem. In fact it seems that the justice system is
being co-opted there to perpetuate old hatreds, if half of what I read
about this is true.

It is also true that stuff like this happens all the time, which makes
it worse if anything. These kids were athletes and good students, with
scholarships waiting and a future ahead of them. Ok, it's their
families saying that, but there are kids that you would not be able to
say that about and families who would not bother.

Bottom line -- perhaps some of these kids should have been charged as
juveniles with misdemenour assault. But so should the white kids in
these fights, I think. A hundred years for wearing Nikes? Not.
