Yes and no.

Haiku, as Americanized, is 17 syllables (it's not syllables in Japanese, 
it's something to do with the number and type of stresses) and can be 
about anything, as long as it's 5-7-5.  Senryu have 17 or fewer syllables.

In traditional Haiku, it is about nature.  Kind of like Sonnets are 
traditionally about love.  My recollection of Senryu are that they are 
traditionally like very, very short sitcoms:  something that speaks to a 
specific scene or concept, but that could be about anybody and is often 
ironic.

So, yeah.  For the haiku battle, we were doing Americanized stuff.  If I 
were trying to write Haiku, I might write about the heat and dry 
outside, or twist it a little and write about the nature of all things 
digital.
