we just had bad experiences with our schools here which included:

**My daughter learning to write her last name in kindegarten only to
be told by the teacher that they don't do that until 1st grade.
**My daughter reading well above her grade level but only allowed to
pick books from the library from the kindegarten section.
**The school rotating problem children in and out of class rooms to
spread the behavior problems instead of addressing them.
**The school assigning so much homework that it became a several hour
ordeal each night.
**The problems with certain children whose parents didn't really seem
to care about their behavior

When my daughter finished her first year of kindegarten, we made the
decision to move her then. The Montessori school we moved to asked if
we would mind holding her back a year because she didn't have the
knowledge level of the 1st years. 1st graders were already doing
division while my daughter had only recently been introduced to
subtraction. There were several other things too.

After the first year in the Montessori's Preprimary Extension class,
my daughter took her Iowa Basic Skills test and got results of 2.5 ~
2.6 in both reading and math, which translates to 2nd grade 5 month.

but really, it all comes down to where your are. I think Texas blows
educationwise. My public elementary school in Colorado, was very
advanced and I've noticed a ton of similarities between it and the
Montessori. When I moved from CO to SD, I was a little bit ahead of
my peers, but SD made pretty decent strides with creating a Gifted &
Talented class during my first year there. When I moved to Texas in
my 8th grade year, I was given 2 periods as office aid and a free form
study hall all because I had already done the subjects available and
there were no advanced options for me.
